'Cause it was the first time I'd ever heard the song, seen the Dead in person, been to the Fillmore West and I taped it.

I was looking for one of the Garcia/Kahn versions on YouTube, and came across this one of Levon Helm & His Dirt Farmer Quartet. Levon didn't live much longer after this was filmed, and doesn't look too good; Larry Campbell does a good job on a nicely swinging rendition.

And here's one of the nicer Garcia/Kahn performances that I could find. I like Jerry's solos on these longer ones.

4/6/82 (Road trips release) and 5/2/70 (DP Harpur's College) are the best. Very different, but both awesome.

I must say I have that one pretty well imprinted! Whether it's "The Best" Deep Elem or not, it's definitely a favorite. Must have been the influence of Otis waiting in the wings.

Otis was Bob's dog, and he wandered on stage during, I think, Ripple. So on the Ripple during Reckoning there's a moment where Jerry says "That's Otis."

Why thank you. That was an enjoyable read. Except for the part where the writer describes Ripples as a trivial song. Boo!
